The Vizsla Health Trust was set up in 2020 and exists to promote and support research into genetic diseases affecting Hungarian Vizslas. Our current focus is Vizsla Inflammatory Polymyopathy (VIP) – but for the future, VIP will not be our only interest. There are other inheritable Illnesses affecting the breed – Immune Mediated Disease generally and epilepsy and cancer too. Canine genetic research is a field with ever improving technology and the hope is that in future it will be possible to identify risk factors for even the more genetically complex diseases. Scientific Research costs money and we very much want to be in a financial position to explore and optimise any new initiatives with the potential to help breed healthier vizslas

News - September 2026

We are excited to announce the launch of our first major funding effort. The Canine Genetics Centre at the University of Cambridge have now initiated new research to further investigate the genetic variants associated with Vizsla Inflammatory Polymyopathy (VIP)

The work will build on findings already reported by Massey J et al . Whole genome sequencing will be utilised, on a hypothesis-free approach, with the aim of identifying additional factors influencing the risk of an individual dog developing VIP

The project has benefited hugely from additional and generous financial support from the Hungarian Vizsla Welfare Charity
